Be on your Guard, Stay Alert The Son of Man Series Luke 12 9/13/2026 Be on your Guard against Hypocrisy (Luke 12:1–12) In the Christian life, a hypocrite is somebody who tries to appear more spiritual than he or she really is. How can believers keep hypocrisy out of our lives? We must understand what hypocrisy really is. Like yeast, hypocrisy begins very small but grows quickly. Hypocrisy is foolish and futile because nothing can really be hidden forever, v2-3. We need to recognize that fear is what causes hypocrisy (v4–7). The remedy for hypocrisy is to forget about what people may say and do and fear God alone. A surefire way to avoid hypocrisy is to confess Christ openly (v8–9). The “blasphemy against the Holy Spirit” Be on your Guard against Covetousness (Luke 12:13–21) Covetousness is an unquenchable thirst for getting more and more of something we think we need in order to be truly satisfied. (1 Timothy 6) There are perils to prosperity (Proverbs 30:7–9). Wealth can choke the Word of God (Matthew 13:22), create snares and temptations (1 Timothy 6:6–10, 17–19), and give us a false sense of security. Timeless Truth: People who are only satisfied with the things money can buy are in great danger of losing the things that money cannot buy. Be on your Guard against Worry (Luke 12:22–34) Worry gives us a false view of life and of God. (2 Thessalonians 3:6–15) Worry also keeps us from growing spiritually, making us like the unsaved in the world (v30). Timeless Truth: Worry is unchristian because worry is sin. (Philippians 4:6; Romans 14:23; Matthew 6:25-34) – worry, or anxiety, reveals a lack of faith in God. Stay Alert (Luke 12:35–53) (Matthew 24:43; 1 Thessalonians 5:2; Revelation 16:15) Working while we Wait We may not seem to be successful in our own eyes, or in the eyes of others; but that is not important. The thing God wants is faithfulness (1 Corinthians 4:2). (Ephesians 2:8–10; 2 Timothy 2:11–13) (1 Corinthians 3:13–15; 2 Corinthians 5:10) Staying Alert involves exercising Discernment and Diligence (Luke 12:54–59) Discernment (v54–57) Diligence (v58–59) We must apply these truths to our own lives personally. The storm of God’s wrath is coming, and the Judge is already standing at the door (James 5:9). Am I ready to meet Him?
